Catherine "Cathie" Getchell Gabel, 88, died October 26, 2016 in Huntsville, Texas. She was born in Duluth, Minnesota to Frank and Allace Getchell. Cathie is survived by her husband of 64 years, William "Bob" R. Gabel. She is also survived by five children; Sara and husband Roger Hood of Dallas, Christie and husband Fred of Austin, Terry and husband Lewis of El Paso, Peter of Clear Lake and Becky and husband Steve of Montgomery. She will be missed by eleven grandchildren; Jeni, Andy, Brandon, Christopher, Adam, Tres, Matt, Alex, Nicholas, Emily and Tommy and three great-grandchildren; Caleb, Logan and Carter Lee. She is also survived by her sister, Sister Frances Getchell of Minneapolis, MN. Cathie is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Susan Semrad, and brother- in- law, Chuck Semrad.
Cathie graduated from College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a BS in Occupational Therapy. During college she trained at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, where she met her husband, Bob Gabel. They were married on January 10, 1953, in Minneapolis. As a child and adult with four daughters Cathie was very involved with the Girl Scouts. Cathie worked as an Occupational Therapist for Baylor Hospital in Dallas and the Klein Independent School District in Houston. She was always a volunteer. While in Dallas she volunteered for St. Paul's Catholic Church; In Houston, for M.D. Anderson Hospital; and in Huntsville, for Habitat for Humanity. She loved playing bunco, sewing and made many quilts throughout her life. In their retirement, Cathie and Bob enjoyed traveling around the world and living in Elkins Lake for the last 25 years.
Friends are invited to a visitation with the family from 5:30-7 on Thursday Nov. 3 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 1603 Avenue N Huntsville, Texas (936-295-8159), with a rosary at 7:00pm. There will be a funeral Mass at 11:00, Friday Nov. 4 with a reception lunch following.
