David's Story

David Martinez, 89, entered into the Heavenly Kingdom on Thursday (February 9, 2017) in a gentle and peaceful sleep. David was born on June 28, 1927 to the late Dionicio and Anjelina Martinez of Westfield, Texas, and made his home and served his community in Huntsville, Texas.
David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. David served his country in the Army from 1945 to 1947 under the Command of General Douglas MacArthur with an Honorable Discharge. David volunteered for the Fire Department in Huntsville, then later became an Assistant Fire Chief. He served his community in this capacity for 35 years. David received an award for his loyalty and selfless civic service during his tenure with the City of Huntsville, as a Council member from 1994 to 2002. The Committee for The Presidential Inaugural requested the honor of David to attend and participate in the Inauguration of George Walker Bush as President of the United States of America and Richard Bruce Cheney as Vice President of the United States of America on Saturday, the twentieth of January two thousand and one in the City of Washington. David worked with his brother Silverio Martinez in the auto repair business until he purchased the garage from him and also worked in the wrecker business for over 55 years.
David is survived by his loving daughter, Linda Martinez Adams and husband, Gilbert I. Adams, grandson, James Robert Dunkin, wife, Yolanda and new son/great grandson, Ryan Scott, granddaughter, Adrienne Dunkin Dietert and husband, Derrick, granddaughter, Esther Raquel Martinez Warren and husband, OD, grandson, Michael Lee Martinez, four great grandchildren, Terik, DJ, Katrina, Alexyss, and great, great grandson Legend Nehemiah, sisters Mary and Esther, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and a host of friends. David was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Martinez Hartman, son, David Roy Martinez, parents, Dionicio and Anjelina Martinez, mother of Linda and Cynthia, Ortha Lavonne Whitehead Martinez, brothers and sisters, Gonzalo, Silverio, Antonia, Amparo, Isaiah, Consuela and Sarah.
Graveside services will be held Saturday afternoon (February 25, 2017) at 2:00 p. m. in the Adickes Addition to Oakland Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas with Dr. Gilbert I. Adams and David's nephew, Jacob "Jake" Montoya, officiating. A 21 gun salute by the local color guard of the Army and the honorable members of the Fire Department of Huntsville will be in attendance.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home in Temple, Texas and Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso, Texas, and the nurses, especially Bea of the Memory Support Unit in El Paso, as well as family members, Adrian Martinez, Yolanda Martinez Hawke, and Lydia Martinez Schraeder, friends of the family, Doris and Glenn Moore of Las Cruces, New Mexico for their generous care and love with special appreciation to the Reverend & Mrs. Carl Hernandez (Becky).
