Dorothy's Story

Dorothy Frances Rutledge Burris, born September 2, 1924 in Kenedy, Texas to Abb Martin Rutledge and Eva Leah Oneal Rutledge, passed away in Huntsville, Texas on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.
Dorothy moved to Alice at the age of 11 months. She was educated in Alice public schools, graduated from William Adams High School, and received a Major in Music Education and Piano, and a Minor in English from Texas Women's University in Denton. She went on to attend Master Piano and music classes at the University of Colorado.
Mrs. Burris taught music in Alice Public Schools and formed a High School Chorus that went on to win a first class rating in interscholastic competition. She taught private piano for 5 years, served as organist and choir director for the First Methodist Church of Alice, was an active member of the First United Methodist Women and past-president of the Alice Music Study Club.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Burris drew strength from her church and her loving and close-knit family including her husband, Sam Houston Burris; their children, Sam Houston Burris, Jr. and Barrett Holland Burris; Sam Jr's wife, Judy Stevens Johnson Burris, whom she loved as a daughter; their granddaughters, Leah, Diana, Katherine, and Sarah Burris, and their great-grandsons, Jackson Blake Burdett and Sam Truitt Fritsch, and their great-granddaughters, Macy Leigh Brunson and Allison Frances Fritsch.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Alice, Texas with Celebration of Life to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2016. Pastor Dale Wilson officiating.
