Florence Marjorie Jones Cottrell, age 93, died Saturday, February 24, 2018 in The Woodlands, Texas.
Born in the town of Treorchy in the beautiful Rhonddha Valley of South Wales in 1924, Mrs Cottrell met and married her lifelong partner, H.D. Cottrell, Jr, a sergeant in the U.S. Army AirCorp in London, England, during World War II.
The two met at a roller rink, where each accused the other of hiring a young boy to trip Marjorie, allowing them to meet. They were married a year later on March 11, 1944. Later that year, their first child, Barry was born on December 24.
Thirteen months later Marjorie and Barry were among the first War Brides and Children to leave England for the United States. Sergeant Cottrell, having been injured, had been returned earlier for rehabilitation.
A US citizen, but always British, she never let us forget our British roots, staying in contact with our relatives with Christmas cards, boxes and traditions, and later, when it became more common and affordable, long distance calls to the "homeland".
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. H.D. Cottrell Jr., her parents, William Lawson, and Edith Maude Jones, her three sisters, Valmar Jones Harman, Delicia Jones Blue, and Hillary Jones Petsing.
She is survived by her four children, Barry Wayne (Cathy), James Buchanan, (Diann), Susan Colleen Babineaux, and Melissa Joell Hunziker, (Keith), ten grandchildren; Cody Cottrell, Elizabeth Cottrell, Shane Cottrell, Brandy Cottrell, Jason Babineaux, Jamilyn White, Joelle Olmstead, Jared Babineaux,Jordan Hunziker, Sian Hunziker; and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Huntsville, Texas on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 2:00 pm with a reception immediately following the service. " God Save the Queen" , or as we Yanks know it, "My Country Tis of Thee" will be played at the end of the service. Mom would have liked that. Spreading of her ashes will take place at a later date in the beautiful mountains of South Wales.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations in Marjorie's name be sent to The Huntsville Library, 1219 13th Street, Huntsville, Texas, 77340.
