James Alfred Godfrey


James Alfred (Jim) Godfrey passed away January 7, 2019 at the age of 95. He was born August 2, 1923 in Newport, New Jersey to Alfred and Bertha Godfrey
Jim was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in Panama.
He attended the University of Texas on a baseball scholarship and was a left-handed pitcher for the Longhorns. After graduation in 1950, he played ball in the minor leagues for the Austin Pioneers and the Jackson Senators.
He went on to become a teacher and coach in the Conroe Independent School District. Jim worked as a pharmaceutical salesman for E.R. Squibb and Sons for 31 years before retiring in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Sarah Frances Harris Godfrey; his daughter, Christina Godfrey Townsend.
He is survived by his wife Gertrude Geraldine (Gerry) Reed Godfrey, daughter Janet Milam, and son Thomas Godfrey. He was a loving grandfather to Mark, Matthew, James, Sarah and Trey and to great -granddaughter Megan.
The family wishes to express their thanks to his caregiver Esther Baker for her great care and compassion; and to his nurses Tasha and Jennifer.
Funeral services will be held at Hawthorne Baptist Church in New Waverly, Texas at 11:00am on Saturday, January 12, 2019. Visitation will be 10-11am prior to the service.
