Louie McClanahan Payne was born on August 26, 1923 and died in Huntsville, Texas on October 27, 2016. She graduated from McMurry College in Abilene, Texas and taught public school in several Texas towns, including Cotton Center, where she began her teaching career, Austin, where she taught while her husband attended the University of Texas, and Huntsville, where she taught most of her professional career. She was an educator who inspired many students. Friends, family, and colleagues remember her as a gentle, warm, intelligent woman who had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a woman of dignity who lived her life with grace and humility. Like her husband, John, she saw the world as it is without ever losing hope about what it might become.
Mrs. Payne married her husband, John W. Payne, Jr., in Hale County, Texas. They were married 65 years. He preceded her in death on April 11, 2009. She is survived by her sister-in-law, four nieces, and a nephew. Services will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Stephens Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kellura Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Brooke Cemetery under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home of Huntsville.
