Michael "Mike" Phillip Pugh

February 09, 1947 - September 25, 2018

Michael Mike Phillip Pugh Mike Pugh, of Huntsville, Texas, passed away at the age of 71 on Tuesday, September, 25th, 2018 after a brave two-year battle with Parkinson's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.
He was born in Grand Saline, Texas on February 9, 1947 to Ray and Barbara Pugh. Mike was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Cathy; son Charlie; daughter Sally, her husband Wade and grandchildren Sophie and Jack; brother Pat, and his wife Charla Ann; his cousin Kathy; and numerous nieces, nephews and family.
Mike grew up in Longview, TX. He and his brother Pat were not just brothers, but best friends. Mike's love of music began at an early age and continued as he played in a band in high school and college. He graduated with his Bachelor's degree from Lamar University, where he met the love of his life, Cathy Sue. Mike and Cathy have a special kinship with their college friends from Lamar and always will. Mike went on to receive his Masters and PhD in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. He was hired in 1981 to establish a program for mentally- challenged offenders with the TX Dept. of Criminal Justice, and completed his career as the Assistant Director of Health Services for TDCJ. After retirement, Mike taught as an Adjunct Professor at SHSU.
Mike was a kind, quiet soul with a creative mind. He had a tremendous love for music, art, theater, singing, and playing the guitar. He loved the outdoors, hiking, and backpacking across the US with his best buddies. He was an avid reader, a beautiful writer, and a life-long learner. Mike liked to eat healthy but never missed an opportunity to eat his Blue Bell! Mike's favorite activities were spending time at home with his family at his side, feeding the birds, singing in the church choir, and enjoying time with his friends. He was a great brother, a good friend, a wonderful father and grandfather, and a loving husband.
He is loved by many and will be remembered as a kind and caring man who loved his family and his Lord.
Visitation will be held at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville from 3-5 PM on Sunday, September 30th. Celebration of Life Service at First Christian Church Huntsville at 11AM on Monday, October 1st.
