Wilburn's Story

Wilburn Holloway Whaley, Jr., better known to most as "W.H." or "Whaley," passed away Saturday, February 24, at the age of 84. He was born in Hearne, Texas, on April 23, 1933, to Wilburn Holloway Whaley and Sadie Franklin Whaley.
Wilburn graduated from Bryan High School and Sam Houston State University. He served in the Army during the Korean War. The majority of his working life was spent as an employee of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. His career spanned 32 years, and he retired in 1993 as Assistant Director of Accounting and Business Services.
Throughout his life, Wilburn was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed many happy
times hunting at the deer lease with his friends. He was a charter member of the Huntsville
Bass Club, and fishing remained his favorite pastime in later years. He also enjoyed traveling with his children to several foreign countries and numerous locations in the United States.
Wilburn was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Whaley.
Survivors include two daughters: Rebecca Lynne Whaley of Iola and Kristi Whaley Brown and husband Paul of Conroe; a son, Kevin Lee Whaley of Houston; a sister, Rose Whaley Downs of Minden, Nevada; two brothers: John Whaley and wife Adrian of Dayton, Nevada and Dana Whaley and wife Pam of Carson City, Nevada; step-granddaughters Sierra Brown and Chloe Brown; nieces and nephews: Diana Rowe, Mike Downs, Matt Whaley, Jeremy Whaley, Nicole Schram, Grant Boldt, and Derek Pendergraft.
He is also survived by long-time caregivers: Celeste Parish, Nancy Duncan, Para Lee Johnson, and Johanna Whaley. He will be lovingly missed by grandogs: Maggie, Rylee, Lexi, Bella, Billy, Banjo, and Roger.
Visitation is Friday, March 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, where the service will be conducted on Saturday, March 3, at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Reagan Cooksey officiating. The eulogy will be given by Jim Mabry. Burial will follow in the Bryan City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are Kevin Whaley, Paul Brown, Jimmy Harding, Sean Harding, Stacy Trantham, and Dick McGown. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Winkelmann and Jim Mabry.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.
