William Henry Hodges, age 83, went home to meet his Lord and Savior on November 8, 2016. He was born on August 6, 1933 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the third son of Raymond Earl and Margaret Thoemke Hodges.
Hodge, as he was known, grew up in Webster Groves, Missouri. He graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1953 where he was recognized as an outstanding athlete. He attended the University of Missouri, majoring in Business Administration. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He spent two years in the US Army which included a tour of duty in Germany. He moved to Dallas in 1958 and was a salesman for Clarke & Courts. He married Ann Scarborough on February 24, 1961. They had two children, Leslie and Jim. He became a District Manager with Steelcase Office Furniture in 1964, and moved to Houston in 1968. In 1973 he moved his family to Huntsville and in 1975 opened Hodges Business Interiors. Hodge was appointed to an unexpired term on the Huntsville City Council in 1975 and was elected to 4 consecutive terms. He was elected Mayor of Huntsville and served from 1991 - 1995. He was active in the Huntsville/Walker County Chamber of Commerce, United Way Fund, Walker County Fair Association, Rotary Club, and University Heights Baptist Church.
Hodge was known by many and loved by all. His attitude and outlook on life were one of a kind. He loved God, his family and his community. He will be missed by many.
Hodge was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother Jack. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Hodges, daughter Leslie Whitmire and her husband Andrew, son Jim Hodges and his wife Melissa, grandchildren Katie Keil and her husband David, Bryce Whitmire and his wife Catherine, Austin, Tyler and Zandie Hodges, and his oldest brother Robert Hodges.
Pallbearers will be Gene Barrett, Gene Blair, Bob Ernst, Tom Freeman, Ron Lange, Ralph Lawson, Jack Olsta and Joe Sandel.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.
A celebration of his life will be on Friday, November 11, 2016. There will be a time of visitation at University Heights Baptist Church beginning at 1pm prior to the funeral service, which begins at 2pm with Rev. Richard Rogers officiating. A private family burial will follow at the cemetery.
