William Henry Knotts, Jr.
William Henry Knotts, Jr., 88, of Iola, TX, died peacefully March 25, 2019. Bill was born in Houston, TX, on September 25, 1930 to Mary Lois Gilpin Knotts and William Henry Knotts. In 1933, the family moved to Iola, TX, and began farming land they had purchased along the Navasota River. Bill described his early childhood fondly, even though the Great Depression was hard for his parents. He enjoyed spending time at the farm with his father, riding horses and learning all he could about the land. Bill's family moved to Huntsville, TX, when he was 12. There he enjoyed participating in the Boy Scouts and reached the Eagle rank at age 16. Bill began college at Texas A&M in 1947. He met his future wife, Muriel Gwendolyn Cruse, in 1950 while she was attending Sam Houston in Huntsville. They married in 1951 and moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he was stationed with the U.S. Air Force. Their daughter, Susan, was born a few weeks before they returned to College Station, TX, for Bill to finish his Civil Engineering degree at A&M. In 1957 Bill and Muriel moved to Huntsville where their two sons, William and John, were born. Bill joined his father at Builders Supply, a construction and ready-mix concrete company. Throughout the years, Bill maintained a constant work association with farming and ranching in Iola. He was able to spend a few of his final years living at the ranch, which brought him great joy.
Bill is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years Muriel Cruse Knotts; mother Mary Lois Gilpin Knotts; father William Henry Knotts, Sr.; sister Lois Ann Russell; sister Mary Perkins; grandson Clay Warren Hunt; great granddaughter Barbara Grace Hamilton; and daughter-in-law Janice Arlene Knotts.
Bill is survived by his daughter Susan Knotts Selke and husband Richard; son William Henry Knotts III; son John Cruse Knotts; granddaughter Allison Hunt Hamilton and husband David; grandsons Brian John Knotts; Bradley William Knotts and wife Taylor; Blake Allan Knotts; and great granddaughter Annabelle Grace Hamilton.

Bill was a special friend to us. When we moved to Huntsville, we were urged by many to get to know him as we bought the lovely home his father built on FM 247. And he was an Aggie! He selflessly shared the family photo album chronicling the building of the house in 1947. He came to our home a few times, even bringing us the original light fixtures from the rock fence that was once at the entrance to the property. We really enjoyed his company and framed a picture of Taps, his collie from childhood which still hangs in our home. We’re so glad you are reunited with your sweet wife and your grandson, Clay, both of whom he spoke often. RIP dear friend.
