Charles's Story

Text size

Charles Luther Mathis has gone to be with his family and friends that left this world before him. Charles was born on September 25, 1943 to Martin Luther Mathis and Ophelia Reaves Mathis in Houston, TX and moved to Phelps, TX when he was six years old. He graduated Huntsville High School in 1962 and served in the US Army from 1965-1967 where he was stationed in Africa. After being honorably discharged from the Army and coming home, he went to work for Gibbs Ranch. He met Elaine at the Café Texan and married her May 31, 1968. They were married for 43 years before she left this earthly home in 2011. Charles went to work for the City of Huntsville in April 1970 and retired from there as a Water Plant Supervisor, after 30 years of service. Charles was preceded in death by his father and mother, his brothers Clayton and Marvin Mathis, his sister-n-law, Pat Mathis, his wife, Elaine Mathis, his sister-n-law, Rose Mathis and brother-n-law, Bobby Conner. He is survived by his sisters, Gwen Conner, Martha and husband, Bobby Hoke; sister-n-law and husband, Edwina & Tommy Oliver; brother-n-law and wife, Bill & Linda Carter; sister-n-law, Earleen Strunk; daughter and husband, LeWanda & Tim Martin; daughter and boyfriend, Holly Beaird & Rumaldo Monjaras; son and girlfriend, Charles E Mathis & Dawn Gatewood; and daughter, Sara Mathis all of Huntsville. He is also survived by his grandsons, Timothy and Zachary Martin, Dustin Beaird, Charles E Mathis II, and granddaughter, Mackenzi Beaird; bonus grandkids, Precious Gatewood, Jaelin and Jayden Davis and several cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and special friends Jeannette Lawrence, Wayne Lawrence, Barbara Tate, Jessie Stephenson and Jason Pierce.
Charles loved his horses. He named them all and he'd call them up when it was time to feed. If he wasn't messing with his horses, you could find him helping other people with their yards and other things. He enjoyed working in the yard or anything outside. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and Elaine's forever Valentine. His sister, Gwen says, "My little brother, Charles, was a very special person. He was a quiet, gentle man. He was hard working and very intelligent. When he did a job, you can be certain it was done as good as possible. He had high morals, truth and integrity. He may not have said much, but when he spoke it meant something. He was a deep thinker and an honorable man. His children and family are blessed to have been honored with his presence. My sister, Martha and I will miss him terribly, but have many happy memories of past times!" He really enjoyed being with his family and most recently, Lil Charlie was the light in his eyes. That light went out on February 15, 2017, peacefully in his home.
He will be laid to rest next to Elaine at Blackjack Cemetery. Pallbearers are John, Clay, Roy and Mark Mathis, Robert Dawson and Lee Beaird. Honorary pallbearers are Jason Pierce, Harley Lovings and Jim Whipple. Officiating the services will be Rev. Michael Hunt of Pine Prairie Free Will Baptist Church, where Charles was a faithful parishioner.
