Frank D. "Poncho" Roberts passed away in his home surrounded by family on Sunday May 21, 2017 in Huntsville, Texas, at age 85.
Poncho is survived by his wife Sugar Roberts, His son Frank Roberts Jr. & his wife Debbie, Daughter Debbie Kay Shaver & her husband Rance, Grandchildren Wade Roberts & his wife Stacey, Bryan Roberts & his wife Meredith, Emily Ellis, Contrel Mayes & her husband Chad, Reuel Shaver, Caleb Shaver, and Hannah Shaver. Great Grandchildren Chalynn Mayes, Olivea Mayes, Avery Roberts, and Wyatt Roberts, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Poncho was born on February 19, 1932 in Madisonville, Texas to Daisy Bell & Frank D. Roberts. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in 2009 with a degree in Theatre Arts. He married Sugar B. Henry, his childhood love in 1951. Poncho worked for Southwestern Bell telephone company for over 30 years. With Southwestern Bell he was assigned to be a Communications Specialist at NASA, and worked on many missions to include The Gemini and Apollo missions. After his retirement, Poncho devoted his time to being an outstanding citizen and energetic volunteer. He volunteered with many organizations including Huntsville ISD, Huntsville Memorial Hospital, The Southwestern Bell Pioneer Club, Rotary Club, and many more. He received various honors to include Citizen of The Year and Rotary Hall of Fame!
A "Lying in State" viewing is scheduled for Wednesday May 24, 2017 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. A memorial service in his honor will be Thursday May 25, 2017 at 1pm at University Heights Baptist Church, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ponchos's life.
