Homer's Story

Homer Clarence Powell, Jr., age 86, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016 at Bayshore Medical Center in Pasadena. He was born on November 28, 1929 in Angleton, Texas to Homer Clarence Powell, Sr. and Maude Winters Powell.
A natural athlete, Homer played football and graduated from Huntsville High School. He went on to play football at Victoria Jr. College and completed his education from Sam Houston State University receiving his Master's Degree in 1958. Homer served our country in the US Navy for four years during the Korean conflict. He began a career at Deer Park High School in 1957 where he dedicated his life as an educator and coach in men's sports. His heart's desire to motivate and inspire students continued on in his position as principal of DPHS, retiring in 1988 after 31 years. He was an avid fisherman, loved playing golf and cards and genuinely loved people and his family.
Homer is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gloria, children; Walt Powell, Pam Powell Funderburg, Becky Powell Northam, Brad McBride, and Todd McBride, 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, sister; Monte Powell Doolittle and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings; A.B. Cowan, Thelma Cowan Franks, Curtis Cowan, Vernon Powell, Chester Powell and Max Powell, grandson Evan Powell Funderburg, and former wife Lenora Ann Murray Powell.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 6th, 4pm at Pasadena Funeral Chapel 2203 Pasadena Blvd. Pasadena, TX 77502. Funeral Service is Monday, November 7th , 11am at Deer Park United Methodist Church 1300 E. 13th St. Deer Park, TX 77536. Officiating the service will be Rev. T. Paul Kethley. Co-officiating, Chaplain Wesley Pogue of Ft. Bend Christian Academy. Pallbearers are grandsons Wyatt Powell, Walker Powell, Jake Northam, 2d Lt. David Thomas, SO1 Kyle McBride, and Jordan McBride.
Memorial donations may be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
