James's Story

J Doug Gary of Schertz, Texas passed away 19 December 2016. He was a resident of Huntsville for more than thirty years proudly serving with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
He was born in Anderson, South Carolina to Dot Whitaker and James Monroe Gary. He attended Anderson Boys High School while living with his mother and stepfather, Cecil Smith. They preceded him.
At the age of 17, he joined the US Air Force where he served on active duty for more than 20 years until his retirement from Randolph AFB, Texas. He was employed by the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD as an Attendance Officer and Director of Community Education. He continued his public service as the 25th Judicial District Juvenile Probation Officer in Guadalupe County, Texas and then with the Universal City Police Department Juvenile Services until his transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, where he served as a Program Administrator until his retirement in 1999.
Doug was a lifetime member of the Walker County Fair Association serving as the Chairman of the Scramble Heifer Committee from 1984 to 1997. He also served as Director of the Association and a Vice President.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn and three children, daughters Marla (Jim - retired USAF Lt Col) Hash of San Antonio, daughter Susan (retired Asst Warden, TDCJ) and son-in-law Keith Wilburn (retired Major, TDCJ) of Silverton, Texas and son Scott Gary of Huntsville. There are seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, January 13, 2017 at Northside Baptist Church.
His ashes will be interred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a future date.
