James Jim C. Tatum, Houston Police Department, retired, of Conroe, Texas passed away Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the age of 73. Originally from Houston he was born on October 28, 1943 to Johnnie Buster and Louise Tallant Tatum at St. Joseph Hospital. Jim is preceded in death by his parents and many beloved aunts, uncles and friends. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara Hayman Tatum; son Bryan; stepdaughter Shann and husband Roger Ormiston; stepdaughter Staci and husband Juventino Castillo and grandchildren Isaiah, McKenzie and Malayna. He is also survived by his brother John Tatum and wife Laverne, niece Martha and nephews Paul and Danny.
Jim served in the United States Navy from August 1964 until August 1970 with a Submarine Reserve Unit. Additionally, he spent five months active duty on the Naval Destroyer the U.S.S. John Weeks. In 1970 Jim began an honorable career with the Houston Police Department where assignments included Traffic and Accident Division, North Division, an attachment to the S.W.A.T. team Command Post and, most recently, Communications Management Division. He was proudly promoted to the rank of Sergeant before retirement. In his spare time he was known to enjoy being a certified scuba diver, licensed pilot, and holding a HAM radio license. His hobbies included astronomy, riding motorcycles, kit planes, collecting model trains and volunteering countless hours to The Owen Theater and The Crighton Theatre both in downtown Conroe. He was a very kind, caring and generous man who was always ready to lend a helping hand. His presence will be greatly missed in the community.
A memorial reception will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017 from 1-3 p.m., at The Owen Theatre, 225 Metcalf Street in Conroe. Interment of ashes to immediately follow at Earthman Resthaven Cemetary, 13102 North Freeway in Houston. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Houston Police Department 100 Club. www.the100club.org
