Funeral service for John A. Cunningham, 94, of Elkins Lake, who joined his wife in the presence of our Lord, Saturday, January 21, 2017, while at M.D. Anderson Hospital, will be Friday, January 27, 2017, 11:00 AM, at University Heights Baptist Church, Huntsville, TX. David Valentine will officiate and Sam Houston Funeral Home will direct. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, Thursday, January 26, 2017, at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, Huntsville, TX. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Adickes Addition.
John was born January 16, 1923, in Iowa Park, Texas. He was educated in the public schools of Texas and received his BBA and MBA from the University of North Texas. He was a member of the Geezles fraternity and founded Alpha Lamda Pi honorary society. His education at North Texas was interrupted by his enlistment after Pearl Harbor.
John served with the US Army in Europe in WWII in a Signal Intelligence unit. He was married to Mary Jane Wolfe shortly after coming back from the war. They lived in Vet Village at NTSU until John finished his MBA.
John was employed by Mobil Oil Corporation for 32 years. He was the assistant manager of the Dallas Accounting and Computer Center, Controller of the Corpus Christi Exploration and Producing Division, Controller of the Houston Exploration and Producing Division, and Manager of Financial Controls for the E&P Division in New York. He served on several committees of the Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association. He also served on the advisory board to the Department of Accounting at the University of North Texas. For the past 33 years John lived in Elkins Lake where he served on the ELRC Board of Directors.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Jane. He is survived by his son John Michael and his wife Jennifer of Tulsa, OK and their four children; John Thomas Cunningham, his wife Morgan, and their children Victoria and John Everett; Ranae Garner, her husband Kaleb, and their children Kinley, Zoey, and Declan; Jeff Cunningham, his wife Jenna; and Brian Cunningham and his wife Anna, all of Tulsa, OK., and his son Kent, of Houston, TX.
In lieu of flowers donations to Dallas Theological Seminary (www.dts.edu) or Entrusting Truth (entrustingtruth.org) in John's name would be appropriate.
