Lewis's Story

Lewis Leon McGilberry went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 3, 2016 while at home with his devoted family at his bedside.
Lewis was known as Dad to his five children and as PawPaw by his 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Lewis was born May 16, 1924 in Riverside, Texas spending most of his young life going to school and helping his mother in their huge garden in the evenings. His dad was Daniel Pratt McGilberry, his mother was Eula Willie McGilberry. Lewis graduated from Huntsville High School in May of 1941 and started to work at the Fuller Earth Plant in Riverside. In the later months after the Pearl Harbor attack, he volunteered for the U S Navy and later received an honorable discharge.
Lewis returned home and married the love of his life Hazel Burson from Crockett, Texas. Lewis and Hazel settled in Riverside, Texas where they had 5 children, 3 girls and 2 boys and bought a farm and raised cattle.
Lewis served on the Riverside School Board in 1955; he served as an alderman at the Riverside City Hall for many years. He was an ordained Deacon at Riverside Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church.
Lewis retired from TDCJ after 25 years. He worked in heavy equipment and was gifted in fixing tractors, maintainers, dozers and any other equipment put in front of him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, infant son Lewis Jr and daughter Joyce Ansley.
He is survived by his loving wife Hazel McGilberry and his children, Janice Woods and husband Billy, Judy Dodgion, Gary McGilberry and wife Lisa. His grandchildren, Jennie Geaccone and husband Mory; James Harris; Dan Ansley; Jon Michael Dodgion; Kari Dodgion; Joshua Dodgion and wife Kasey, Kyle McGilberry, Kevin McGilberry and great grandchildren, Tyler, Kristen, David, Sammy, Hannah, Lewis, Natalie and Kimmy.
Services for Lewis will be Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 10:00am at Northside Baptist Church. Visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations in Lewis McGilberry's name can be made to the Northside Baptist Church or the Riverside Baptist Church.
