Robert and Florence's Story
Long-time Huntsville residents Bob and Flo Bailey have both passed away. The Bailey's were well known in Huntsville for their service at Huntsville Memorial Hospital where they both spent hundreds of hours volunteering. In 2010, they moved from Huntsville to Austin to be closer to their oldest daughter, Dianne Bailey Miller. They will be interred together on March 20 at 1:00PM at the Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, TX.
Robert J. Bailey, Sr. was born in Lawrence, MA in 1921 to Clarence H. Bailey and Alice Bachelor Bailey. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1940 and began working at the American Woolen Company mill in Lawrence. In June 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served through World War II until he was separated in October 1945. He was a true member of the Greatest Generation. Bob spent his career as an administrative officer with NASA in Virginia and Houston, retiring in 1976 when he relocated to Huntsville.
Bob married the love of his life Florence Virginia Sutton in 1944, at Newport News, VA. They lived happily together for more than 60 years.
Florence Virginia Sutton was born in 1925 in Beckley, WV, to Charles V. Sutton and Kenova Herbert Sutton. She graduated from Coburn High School in Coburn, VA in 1943. After graduating, she joined the rest of her family in Newport News, VA. While there, she volunteered at the USO where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Bob Bailey. They soon married and were loving parents to three children.
Robert Bailey died in January 2014 and Florence Bailey died in December 2016. They are survived by their children: Dianne Bailey Miller and her husband Doug Miller of Austin, TX; Judith Bailey Hager and her husband Steve Hager of Allen, TX, and Robert Bailey, Jr and his wife Dr. Lydia Long Bailey of Abilene, TX. They also leave four grandchildren: Ryan Hager, Cory Hager, Justin Bailey and wife Rosa, and Amber Banner as well as two great-grandchildren who provided great joy in their lives.
