Robert Eugene Yates, age 60, died here in his hometown of Huntsville, Texas on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. He was born April 22, 1956 to Robert Augusta Jr. and Mary Etta Yates. Robert is preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Robert Augusta Sr. and Jane Alice Yates and Lawrence and Lillie Mae Fletcher; and great-nephew, Blake Newman.
Robert was born and raised here in Huntsville. He was a proud Hornet and was a very talented member of the Hornet Marching Band. He made numerous academic accomplishments throughout his school career. He made lifelong friends whom he kept in touch with up to the time of his passing. In the 1980's, Robert moved to Galveston where he worked as a graphic artist. He used his talent and love for art and even designed the signs for the historic ship, The Elissa in Galveston. When you see these signs, you can think of Robert and his wonderful creativity and flair for the arts. Later, he moved south to Corpus Christi, where he lived for over 20 years. Again, he worked in the graphic industry as a lithographer. He leaves behind countless friends from there as well. Robert, or "Bob" as many knew him, will be remembered for his stunning imagination and artistic abilities, his quirky sense of humor, his creativity with projects, art and building, his green thumb and love of plants and nature, and his beautiful singing voice. He loved to help others and used his talents to help raise money and benefit many people throughout his life.
Robert is survived by his sister and husband, Debbie and Mike Skidmore; brother and wife, Steve and B.J. Yates; niece and husband, Sandy and David Newman; nephew and wife, Joe and Katy Tyler; nephew, Cody Yates; niece, Mandy Yates; nephew, Cliff Yates. Great-nieces and nephews: Tori Yates, Morgan Newman, Gus Newman, Savannah Tyler, Ty Tyler, Gracie Love, Colby Yates. Robert is also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to Family Faith Church in Coldsprings, Texas or Cook Springs Baptist Church in Huntsville, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, with the family receiving friends at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, October 22, 2016 in the chapel at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. Interment will follow the service at McAdams Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas.
