Syble Lorene Gunkel Holly, 97, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at the Houston County Nursing Home in Crockett, TX.
Syble, commonly known as Grandmothers, was born on May 22, 1919 in Oklahoma, to Fred and Bertha Gunkel.
Growing up in a family of ten brothers and sisters, she spent most of her young years working on the family farm and ranch, eventually moving to Houston, TX. She met and married Eugene E.A. Holly. Her remaining years were spent in Riverside and Huntsville, TX, pursuing the love of E.A. Holly Water Well, Holly Mining and family. She was a charter member of Elkins Lake Baptist Church. Her life was devoted to God and she lived by her convictions to Him.
Some of her enjoyments in life were playing catcher in the 1930's for the Comets Ladies Semi-Pro Softball Team in Houston, teaching and working with the GA's in church, cooking and playing 42 with friends.
Syble is survived by four children: Jeanie Cochran and husband, Dan, of Waco, TX; Dale Holly and wife, Patti, of Muldoon, TX; Joyce Currie and husband, Archie, of Trinity, TX; Leighnae Poole and husband, Glynn, of Rayville, LA; twelve grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, one great - great grandchild, one brother, four sisters and numerous other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Eugene E.A. Holly, in 1995, her parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2016 with Dr. Ken Huggins and Reagan Cooksey officiating. Burial will follow at Brooke Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Elkins Lake Baptist Church Building Fund, 206 SH 19, Huntsville, TX 77340.
