Mrs. Betty Jane Powledge (B.J.) Obituary

Pflugerville, Texas - Betty "BJ" Powledge passed away August 28, 2025. Born and raised in Grand Saline, Texas, she was salutatorian of her graduating class and was a duchess in the Tyler Rose Festival.


BJ earned her undergraduate degree from UT-Austin and her Master's from Stephen F. Austin State University. She taught English, Speech, and Drama in La Feria, Harlingen, Trinity, and San Benito high schools, Coakley middle school, and in the Wyndham Schools. On retiring, she continued to inspire young minds as a substitute teacher.


A lifelong Methodist, BJ's faith guided her interactions with others. She particularly valued family connections.


BJ was preceded in death by her parents William Morgan and Mildred Fail, her brother William Morgan Fail, Jr., her son Brooks William Conover III, a great grandson Waylon Eagle McCord, and her husband Louie Cole Powledge. She is survived by daughter Carol (Pat) McCord of Pflugerville, grandson Dylan (Natalie) McCord of Tyler, granddaughter Amber (Jose) Juarez of Manor, and five great grandchildren.


Funeral Services will be Sept. 20 at Beck Funeral Home in Pflugerville, TX. Interment will be Sept. 21 at Bedias Methodist Cemetery in Bedias, TX.
