Dr. Akbar Nurid-Din Shabazz Obituary

Dr. Akbar Shabazz was born on March 20, 1950 in Monroe, Louisiana. He is our dear husband, father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. He was affectionately called "Lynn" by his brothers and sisters.

In September of 1977, he began his career by volunteering and helping to implement Islam in the prison system. He provided Texas Department of Criminal Justice 40 years of service and was the Regional Area Muslim Chaplain. Dr. Shabazz was dedicated and worked diligently to help and encourage others no matter where they were in their journey in life.

In 2012, Chaplain Shabazz received his Honorary Doctorate Degree in Divinity from the Trinity International Seminary.

Brother Shabazz was very active in the Prince Hall Masonic Association. He was a member of Fidelity Lodge #221, Past Joshua of Heroines of Jericho Cuney Court #231, Treasurer of Mt. Horeb #117-Holy Royal Arch Masons, Treasurer of Mt. Moriah Council #13-Royals & Select Master Masons, member of Knights of Templar Sanderson Commandery #2, and 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason with Douglas Burrell Consistory #56.

Dr. Akbar Shabazz will always be Loved, Cherished and Admired for his Strength, Love and Dedication to his family and friends.

Dr. Shabazz departed this life on Thursday, April 23, 2020. He was preceded in death by his mother, Matheal Shabazz; sisters, Angela Rudd and Diane Anderson; and daughter Orianda Mosley.

Left to cherish his memories, his wife, Janice Shabazz; his father, Omar Shabazz; son, Akbar Nurid-Din Shabazz II (Dorinda); daughters, Rabiah Shabazz, Ira Mosley, Janice O'Guin (Michael Sr.), Shirley Kamau, Vickey Shaffer (Jerry), and Janice Burns; brothers, Derrick Williams and Bernard Williams; sisters, Donna Al Mansour (Herbert), Chandra Giggins, Deborah Ann Glenn (Robert), and Rhonda Murray (Corey); sisters-in-law, Emma Loings (Andrew), Gladys Agnew, Belma Clark (William), Pelesteen Johnson, Canary Robinson and Peggy Pace (Dennis); grandchildren, Maddison Shabazz, Larry Houston, Jr., Robert Nellums, Michael O'Guin, Jr., Spence Shaffer, James Kamau, Jeremy Shaffer, Jhanae O'Guin, Jonathan Kamau, Jahliece Mosley, Jasmine Shaffer, Jeremy Kamau, Andylynne Crawford, Britney Mosley, Brianna Mosley, Daliyah Shabazz, and Faria Shabazz; nine great grandchildren; special friends, Frederick Waheed, Iman Basil Abdullah, Iman Eugene Farooq, Sulton Muhammad, and Chaplain Myron Waddle, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Private graveside services will be held Saturday, April 25, 2020 at 1:00PM at Northside Cemetery with Muslim officiant Iman Basil Abdullah.
