Glenda Sue Hardy Obituary
New Waverly, Texas - On Thursday, April 8, 1943, Glenda Sue Buchanan Hardy began her life's journey in Houston, Texas and on Saturday, April 19, 2025, this journey came to an end. She exited her body beautifully and peacefully at 82 years of age, surrounded by family in the comfort of her home. Sue leaves behind her beloved son, James (Jimmy) Hardy, her sister-in-law Sue M. Hardy, brothers-in-law Robert (Bob) and Paul Hardy (Verla), nephew Scott Buchanan (Patti) and their son James, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband John Karl, her parents, G.G. and Cecil Buchanan, brother Don Buchanan, niece Lauren Buchanan, nephew Michael Buchanan, brothers-in law W.L. and Joseph Hardy, and sisters-in-law Agnes and Ollie Hardy.
While still very young, Sue and her family moved from Houston to New Waverly, Texas, where she spent the majority of her life. She attended and graduated from New Waverly High School and then went on to pursue a teaching/coaching degree at Sam Houston State University. Sue returned to school to earn a Master's in Education degree as well as a degree in Educational Counseling.
She began her career in Comfort, Texas, as Coach B for the girls' basketball team. Sue had an ability to connect with and draw from her students their very best, which led the team to a hard-earned championship victory. After a few years, she moved back east to be closer to home. She accepted a coaching position in Coldspring ISD and then finally back to her alma mater, New Waverly High School. By this time Sue was known as Coach Hardy and she coached her students in softball, track, basketball (winning another championship), and was instrumental in the start-up of New Waverly's volleyball program. Sue loved coaching. This passion was fueled by her discerning gift to recognize the potential in each of her athletes, using their sport of choice to introduce to them the correlation between their natural abilities, hard work, perseverance, dedication and commitment, and the skills needed to succeed in life. Sue concluded her career in education as a counselor where her own educational journey began, at New Waverly High School.
Sue's talent for teaching did not stop at retirement. She was a member at Hawthorne Baptist Church in New Waverly, Texas, and faithfully served for many years. She loved the Lord and used her talents to talk about, teach, encourage, and support others in the knowledge and understanding of Jesus. She did this by teaching Sunday School, being involved with missions, serving on committees to further the case for Christ, and always noticing and reaching out when there was someone new in church. She had a way of making one feel instantly loved and that they belonged.
Sue married the love of her life, Karl Hardy, and they began their 53-year long love story in 1968. They enjoyed laughing and planning vacations with family and friends to discover the marvels of the world. Sue and Karl discovered there was something more they desired ..... a child. In 1982, they added to their joy of living by adopting their one and only son, Jimmy, who instantly bonded them as a family of three. Aunt Sue doted on him, loved him, raised him to be compassionate, and introduced him to Jesus. Jimmy loved them deeply in return and carries within him the lessons taught by the parents that God chose especially for him.
She also had a keen interest in genealogy, dedicating countless hours to the research of both the Buchanan and Hardy lineage. Sue enjoyed past membership with Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the American Colonists, and with the United Daughters of the Confederacy, for which she held a special fondness. She became an esteemed member, holding several positions of State leadership, including Vice President, 2nd Vice President, and Chaplain. She was a member of the Huntsville J. B. Gordon 339 Chapter in which she had held offices including Chapter President.
Sue loved connecting with people and those connections turned into deep friendships. She believed friendships were like the lyrics from a long-ago song, "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold."
