He attended Dumas High in Dumas, Texas before receiving a bachelor's degree in psychology from Texas Tech. Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Sheron Hodges, on June 15th, 1968, eventually celebrating 56 years of marriage. Jerry received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1973 and became board certified in radiology in 1979. Jerry, or Dr. D as he was fondly called by his colleagues and staff, began his career in Temple, TX in private practice. He continued his medical career in Huntsville, Texas, Livingston, Texas, and Delta, Colorado. In Delta, he worked as the sole radiologist at Delta Memorial Hospital from 1989 to 2004 and during this time, worked with Toshiba to install the first multi-slice dual chamber CT scanner in the United States providing valuable input to the field of diagnostic radiology. Dr. D accepted a position with the Veterans Affair in Temple, Texas in 2008 before retiring from the practice of radiology and medicine in 2015.
Jerry was a steadfast Lutheran. Growing up as the son of a Lutheran Pastor, he lived a life guided by grace and faith, finding comfort in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the mountains. He was a dedicated family man who saw the importance of instilling a strong sense of family, education, and religion into his three children along with a good dose of humor. He loved being "Papa" to his grandkids and never passed up a chance to share his knowledge with them whether it be about hunting, fishing, Jesus, or questionable humor. He will be remembered for his wit, dedication, and Christian faith.
