Huntsville - Jill Adrian McMurry Clements, daughter of John William McMurry, Jr. (Swede) and Amy Adrian McMurry, was called home by her Lord and Savior on November 14, 2025, just before what would have been her 90th birthday.
She was born November 28, 1935 in Gainesville, Texas, where her father was head football coach when that day's 48-0 victory over Highland Park was dedicated to her birth. Jill spent her northeast Texas childhood in Gainesville, McKinney, Marshall, and graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas in 1954. She trained early as a pianist, even playing a duet with Van Cliburn when he needed a piano for practice in the neighborhood.
Jill attended The University of Texas at Austin where she continued her passion for music and graduated with a Music Education degree. While there she was active in Alpha Chi Omega, the University Singers, and Longhorn Singers. She was honorary lieutenant colonel of the Army, Navy, and Air Force ROTC Band, president of the Girl's Glee Club, and chairman of the 75th year committee on school spirit. Jill's dedication to Longhorn spirit culminated in her historic 1957 selection as the first female head cheerleader in the history of UT and then worked closely with Darrell Royal in his first year to found the Royal Spirit Committee. Soon afterward, she was made Honorary Citizen of Grand Prairie, Texas, for her summer Red Cross Swimming Programs. In storybook fashion, Jill met UT quarterback Joe Clements. They married August 8, 1959, and began 55 years of life together teaching, coaching, raising their family and together leading students and communities from Houston to Kingsville to Joe's hometown of Huntsville, Texas.
Jill was the rock of her family, helping to shepherd their children to the highest of their individual potentials even while facing the demands inherent to the family of a Texas high school football coach and athletic director. However, she also made her own career as she taught music for 40 years, first as a piano teacher who trained young musicians for recitals in Houston in the early years of marriage and later introducing thousands of children to the joys of music in Huntsville schools. She even sought out entrepreneurial opportunities as co-owner of Shirt Shack and Kinda Korny.
A fixture on the front row of Hornet football games, Jill was a tireless, vocal leader and supporter of school and community spirit throughout Joe's career during which he served as head coach for 27 years, athletic director for 22, and became the first person to lead the same high school team as a quarterback, and later head coach, to state championships in Texas history - perhaps, American history.
Jill traveled each day with spark and optimism, sharing her creative perspective and artistic skill to elevate beyond the norm. She thought outside the box before it was a catchphrase, saw only possibilities, and made everything better than she found it whether through perfection in the details of gift selection and presentation, precision in musical performance productions, or discernment in sports analysis - all while advocating for people with intellectual disabilities in serving on the Advisory Board for Special Education for Huntsville Independent School District and the board for the Walker County Developmental Center. She was generous with her time and talent, and when flanked by Sam Sandel, Patsy Robinson and Gretchen Durham, the sky was the limit for mischief and fun. Most were celebrations and support for loved ones from legendary Huntsville Hornet décor to campaigns, graduation hoedowns, personalized birthdays, and wedding poundings. Jill's bright light shone through a smile that contained her endless encouragement as a cheerful daughter, wife, mother, friend and teacher to many.
Jill was devoted to her children and her boys Jay, Steve and Chuck who brought her great joy and kept her fully engaged with their achievements and families. In Jill's retirement, she continued to devote her life to her daughter and constant companion "Little" Jill. Jill and Joe shared Jill with Huntsville, modeled love, patience, and kindness, and brightened many a day to all around them.
