Joe Henry Moore Obituary
Huntsville, Texas - Joe Henry Moore, age 87, of Huntsville, TX passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 31, 2025, surrounded by his loving family; his greatest treasure.
Joe was born to Rayford and Leita (Howell) Moore in Huntsville, TX on September 22, 1937. A lifelong Huntsville resident, he graduated Huntsville High School in 1954, at the age of 16. In 1959, he received his degree in Industrial Arts from Sam Houston State Teachers College, where he was a member of the ROTC. He joined the Army Reserves in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1962 as a Staff Sergeant.
In 1954, Joe began his employment with the Texas Department of Corrections. Beginning as a guard at the "Walls Unit", he held the positions of sociologist, and member of the classification committee before going to work for the Parole Board in 1967. In 1992, after spending 8 years with TDC and 25 years with parole, Joe retired having served 33 years of state employment.
His retired life consisted of being blessed with 32 years of enjoying his "pasture" on Rosenwall Road. Days filled with his tractors, his chickens, his shop and his grands and great grands - many of which got to enjoy hours of "picking up limbs". He kept his pasture "picture perfect" and was extremely proud of it.
Joe was an excellent woodworker, and spent many hours in his shop. Along with porch swings, he was well known for his chicken boxes, which were sold throughout the south. All were made with love and with cajun music playing loudly in the background, while he worked.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ray Howell Moore. He is survived by Gracie Mae Countryman Moore, his children Sherry Moore Allen, Robert Moore and wife Rhonda, and Ronnie Moore; grandchildren Jodi Gustafson and husband Gus, Casey Moore and fiancé Pamela, Ashley Webb and husband Dustin, Shane Moore and wife Abigail, Callie Hylton and husband Kyle, Cody Moore and wife Brittani, and Mycah Moore; 12 great grandchildren; sister Jan Campbell and husband Ted and sister-in-law Doris Moore.
He is also survived by many other loving family members and friends, who will deeply miss him. His family was his greatest joy, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Friday, April 4, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville. Memorial condolences to the family may be made at www.shmfh.com.
