John Johnnie Lee Douglas Obituary
Huntsville - Lifelong Walker County resident, John "Johnnie Lee" Douglas passed away peacefully in his sleep, on April 12 ,2025 in Huntsville, Texas. Born February 14, 1936, he was one of seven children born to John "Bud" Douglas, Jr (born 11-22-1913 and passed 9-21-1977) and Osie Lee Pace (born 3-20-1916 and passed 1-17-2007).
Johnnie grew up in the Wesley Grove community, attending Wesley Grove schools and graduating from Sam Houston High School in Huntsville, Texas.
After graduation, he met his wife, Azzie Lee Dickey and they were married October 20, 1956, in Huntsville. To this union four sons were born, Vernon Ray (Joi), Larry Dale (Mary), Warren Edward and John Wayne (Aretha).
During his adult life, Johnnie was a very hard worker and worked for Sam Houston State University as a heavy equipment operator for 37 years. He also worked part-time for Goosby Drug store, delivering medicines and food to the community for 31 years. After retirement, Johnnie stayed active in the lives of his family and friends, and he joined Hills Chapel Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor Jimmy Lawrence when he was 80 years old.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Vyetta Marie, brothers Franklin Deleon and Stanford and his son, Warren Edward.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years Azzie, sons Vernon (Joi), Larry (Mary) and John Wayne (Aretha), sisters Rosa Lee (Douglas) McGowan, Esther Mary (Douglas) Hightower, brother James "Tim" Douglas, special sister-in-law, Betty Faye Hudson, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
His services will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Hills Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 2 Booker Road, Huntsville, Texas at 1pm (936) 291-6331. Interment to follow at Foster Cemetery off Highway 30, Huntsville, Texas, with his parents.
