Mazie Warren Obituary

Huntsville, Texas - Mazie Warren was born on March 5, 1919 to Elam and Alice Boone Warren in Huntsville, Texas. He grew up, received his education in Walker County, and was a graduate of Sam Houston High School.

Mazie joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), a work relief program established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that gave millions of young men employment at environmental projects during the Great Depression. He worked building roads, putting up telephone lines, and planting trees in the local area.

After the CCC, he joined the US Army Air Corps in 1940, which later became known as the U.S. Army Air Forces. While in Alabama at the Tuskegee Army Airfield, he became a Tuskegee Airman. The Tuskegee Airmen included African American pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance and support staff, instructors, and all the personnel who kept the planes and first group of African American pilots in the air during World War II. In 1943, he was then shipped to France to continue the fight to defeat Hitler.

Mazie confessed his love for Christ at an early age. He was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church for many years. Later, he joined Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Michael C. Davis, Sr., where he was an active member of the Male Chorus.

Jesus welcomed Mazie to his eternal home on Memorial Day, May 25, 2020. He leaves rich and wonderful memories with his loved ones, including sons: Larry Warren (Betty), Jerry Warren (Michelle), Leslie Bryan Warren; daughters: Beverly Shaw and Kimberly Merchant (Sterlon); eight grandchildren: Derris Warren, Cameron Warren, Melissa Warren-Garcia, Morgan Warren, Bryan Warren, Brycen Warren, Brailon Warren, and Nia Merchant; three great grandchildren: Isaac Garcia, Samuel Garcia, and Aurelia Warren; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
