Shizuko Aonuma Lowery
Shizuko grew up in Southern Japan and was an avid athlete, becoming a member of the swim, track, volleyball, and kendo teams. She was a child during World War II and experienced many things that a child should never go through. Although she faced many atrocities, she loved the United States of America.
Gerald Jones Lowery was serving our nation with the U.S. Navy in Japan when he met Shizuko. They wed in 1964 and had three children together. They lived in Japan, California, Guam, and Oregon before settling in Huntsville, Texas for over 30 years. Shizuko's life revolved around her three daughters: Jennifer, Susan, and Verna, her husband, and her grandchildren. She loved sewing, creating beautiful clothes for her girls, and watching classic movies - sometimes waking her daughter in the middle of the night to watch musicals and old movies. She encouraged her daughters to pursue their dreams; teaching them empathy, loyalty, and kindness. Shizuko was a natural leader and was the quiet force behind the Lowery home. She attended every recital; band, dance, and choir, beaming with pride during each performance. Shizuko was also an avid sumo wrestling fan and enjoyed watching the tournaments with enthusiasm and spirit. She was proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and loved to cook for them, sew clothes for them, spend time and laugh with them.
Her marriage to Gerald was not always perfect, but they came together in their later years and were a devoted couple, sharing their thoughts, hopes, and dreams. Shizuko was heartbroken to be kept away from her husband at the end of his life. While we are saddened that she is gone, we know that she has embraced her loving husband in the after-life.
Shizuko was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald J. Lowery, parents Fumi and Shotaro Aonuma, siblings Kazue Aonuma Noguchi, Masato Aonuma, Mitsue Aonuma Ibii, Noboru Aonuma, Shojiro Aonuma, and nephew Nobuhiko "Jim" Aonuma. She is survived by her daughters Jennifer Lowery, Susan Lowery and husband Alfredo Cerda, and Verna Lowery; sister Hisako Aonuma Noguchi; grandchildren Brandon Holmes, Austin Holmes, Courtney Wong and husband Tony Wong, Devin Holmes, Keeley Holmes Sorensen and husband Tanner Sorensen, Savannah Holmes and husband Jose Moreno, Sheridan Lowery, and Collin Lowery; great-grandchildren Caiman Sorensen, Aria Holmes, and Kado Moreno; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other family members in the U.S. and Japan.
Funeral services were held in Houston by the Neptune Society. For those wishing to send sympathy cards, please mail them to Shizuko Lowery, care of Wong at: 3520 Jensen Drive, Suite 21299, Houston, Texas 77026.
Please spend time with your family and loved ones; this is what Shizuko would want. We are heartbroken she is gone; we will forever remain strong with each lesson of love, life, and happiness as she taught.
