Sophia Mary Cammarata went to be in God's arms on January 31, 2021 at the age of 92. Sophia, or Mary as she was known to many, was born on August 4, 1928 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She was a faithful woman who treasured family over self. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her universe and she loved them with all her heart.
Sophia grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana where she helped with the family restaurant growing up. She married Sam in 1950 and they lived in Massachusetts and Texas before eventually settling in Houston. They raised their family there until Sam's passing in 1983 and in 1984 she moved to Huntsville to resettle close to her children.
Sophia was a strong woman with grit and determination. She was someone who could never sit still. She had to be doing something useful at all times and she worked her entire life until she could no more. Even with a limited education she was self-driven and was always reinventing herself. She owned multiple businesses over her lifetime. She was an outstanding cook and once owned a catering business and subsequently opened a restaurant. She also owned and operated two retail stores at different times in her life. After moving to Huntsville she provided private childcare. Her final venture was Granny's Candles, which she sold in various market places until she no longer could work after having a stroke. Her life constantly involved people and service in some way. Her family loved hearing stories about her adventures through life which were mostly comical. Nothing made her happier than making someone else happy. A big family dinner with food for an army always filled her heart. She was what many would call "a hoot" and you could depend on her to have a wisecrack or something funny to say. She loved to laugh, she loved Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream, she loved to garden and she looked on the bright side of every situation. She was fearless. She never wavered in the face of life challenges. She was the pillar of strength and sacrificed whatever was necessary for her family. While she could get mad as a hornet at times, her life was driven by her faith in God and her beautiful, loving heart.
Sophia was preceded in death by her husband Sam Cammarata, her brothers Gus Fiongos (Patsy), and George Fiongos. Left to cherish her memory are her 2 children: son, Joe Cammarata and wife Kathy, and daughter, Sandy Cammarata-Garcia; and 1 sister, Maria Demeris (Gus). Also left to fondly remember her are her 6 grandchildren: Angie Truesdale (Scott), Kelsey Woodward (Danny), Gabby Garcia, Sophia Garcia, Gracie Garcia, and Sam Garcia, and 4 great-grandchildren: Liam Truesdale, Josiah Woodward, Ruth Woodward and Ethan Woodward. She also leaves behind cherished nieces and nephews who were very special to her.
The family would like to extend a warm thank you to Avalon Place in Trinity where Sophia spent the last years of her life. The staff and nurses loved her and took care of her like family. The Waller-Thornton Funeral Home is providing final arrangements for the family. Due to the pandemic no public services will be held. Notes of remembrance can be left at the website https://www.wallerthorntonfh.com/obits. In lieu of flowers donations in memoriam of Sophia can be made to Catholic Charities USA.
